Since 2015, I have been going above and beyond what is ordinary. I went the extra mile to engage in an exceptional volunteer initiative. And I am happy to support some nice people doing a great thing – raising funds for people with muscular dystrophy, a disease that has no mercy. I give them my time, energy, knowledge and get a good feeling of helping others.
A Success Story
MDA RIDE is a biker charity event and a big day of solidarity. It is about a joint ride-out of riders on motorcycles of all sizes and brands involving people with muscular dystrophy in cars of partners. This ride-out is definitely not a carefree one. It all started in Prague – at Letňany shopping mall parking – in autumn 2009 with a nice sum of 182 thousand Kč raised. Starting from the second year, the event was being held in June and at a new location – at Hořejší nábřeží in Smíchov district of Prague. It took three years to pile up the first 1 million Kč.
But a breakthrough came in 2016. The event moved to the very center of Prague to Václavské náměstí and sharply enlarged. And not only that – the yield surpassed the magical 1-million-Kč-amount. And the next ninth event, as well as the tenth one, both were an even bigger success. This year’s eleventh event brought 1.6 million Kč – the fourth amazing record yield in a row.
Get Visibility For A Good Cause
According to the data of the Czech Statistical Office, there are about 140 thousand non-profit organizations active in the Czech Republic. Also, according to the register of the Ministry of Interior, more than 1,600 public collections are held here annually. Although Czechs are slowly finding their way to donorship, this is a huge competition.
140 thousand non-profits and more than 1,600 public collections
I personally believe people desire to donate when they know exactly what their money will be used for and that it will be used wisely and sparingly. They also must see the charity has a drive and that it will certainly receive money from someone else, too. People want to see others contribute with time and money to the same activity. Some might have a significant and urgent reason to donate or might be personally involved in the outcome of the supported activity. But everyone likes to get regular information about the progress. Everyone likes to be visibly linked to the success of the project. And you can’t thank people enough for their contributions.
We are striving to show how MDA RIDE activities help people with muscular dystrophy and what those people can achieve. There is no cure yet, but there are treatments available that effectively slow the progression of the disease. Maybe scientists will find a cure one day in the future. And those people will only have a chance if they remain alive until then.
What is Muscular Dystrophy?
Muscular Dystrophy is a group of genetic muscle diseases that result in increasing the weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles and eventually prevent movement over time. The causes are unknown however it is sure that they are in the very muscle cells. These disorders are characterized by progressive muscle weakness and destruction of muscle cells.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which represents the most severe form of the disease affects about one in 5,000 boys at birth. Initially, the boys have no symptoms. They stealthily start to show approximately from the age of 2 years. It begins with walking difficulties and the boys have to use a wheelchair after some time. The disease gradually weakens skeletal muscles. During adolescence, the respiratory muscles are going to be affected (such people need respiratory support) and eventually heart. In many cases, boys live up to 20 years.
During the year, the MDA RIDE approaches potential donors, such as businesses, individuals, foundations, local or regional authorities, in order to raise financial funds or other support for its charitable activities. It also participates in various social, cultural, sport and other charity events to spread the word.
Celebrities advocate for MDA RIDE
We are also happy for celebrities supporting the event and helping us to get attention. They play the role of the MDA RIDE advocates. Then, we have a loose group of supporters on Facebook who like the idea of MDA RIDE and participate according to their individual possibilities in helping people with muscular dystrophy.
The very goal of our fundraising is not interesting enough to make people donate without any promotion. Just a few would seek for what they could contribute to. Therefore, it is inevitable to be consistent in communication, to constantly remind the public and make it aware of our good cause throughout the year. As we have no budget for promotion, our main communication vehicles are our website and social media.
Be original, creative … and different
We believe in originality and creativity – and in being different. With people, we are interacting primarily on Facebook. However, we started to test Instagram and Twitter some time ago. Just recently, we added two new channels. People can hear from us on LinkedIn. And they can also have MDA RIDE in their mobile wallet thanks to one of the partners.
The Mobile Wallet Opportunity
MDA RIDE does not have to develop its own mobile app to be present on people’s mobile phone screen. Although Apple Pay and Google Pay are the mobile wallet apps of two different operating systems, their features and user experience are remarkably similar. Both Apple Pay and Google Pay digital content can be delivered through the same channels, like email, SMS, websites, and social media as well as printed materials.
People can just tap a link on a website, tap a link on social media, tap a link in an online ad. Or just receive an email or SMS with a link, and scan a QR code. And most importantly, in both mobile wallets, the content can be dynamically updated once it has been saved. They both also feature native location and notification functionality.

Make It Easy
By creating various sponsorship and partnership options, we allow businesses of all kinds and sizes as well as individuals to connect with MDA RIDE through sponsorship and donorship. We are also trying to make it as easy as possible to donate to our fundraising account. For instance, we started with QR payments. People can scan the QR code on our website using their mobile banking application. The payment order will be automatically filled in with the correct information. Then we added the PayPal button allowing a one-click donation via PayPal service. Now, we are looking into other digital donorship stuff increasingly becoming available over the social media and other platforms.
What is MDA RIDE financing?
We provide financial contributions towards medical and compensatory aids, transportation with specially adapted vans, reconditioning stays as well as stays and events for individual people with muscular dystrophy. We also reimburse part of the operating costs of neuromuscular disease organizations, such as participation in international muscular dystrophy conferences, and publication of periodicals with information on muscular dystrophy.
Save The Date
The idea to organize a motorcycle charity ride originated in the USA in the early 1980s. The American Love Ride, which has extended to Switzerland and Mexico in the meantime, became an inspiration for Josef „Káďa“ Kadeřábek, a lifelong motorcycle fan.
12th MDA RIDE will be held on June 6, 2020
The MDA RIDE has donated already 7.8 million Kč and helped finance hundreds of projects during its history. We could contribute to individual members of the Parent Project and the Czech Muscular Dystrophy Association for the necessary devices, equipment and recondition stays thanks to sponsors, partners and year-round efforts of volunteers.
And as a time after the MDA RIDE event is always a time before the next MDA RIDE event – save the date and visit the 12th MDA RIDE which will be held in Prague on June 6, 2020.
